Reopening!
New York is re-opening! We are imagining the new normal with these images from the past.
This 1980s picture of the fireworks over the Brooklyn Bridge is from a series of records created by the Dept. of Economic Development.
Cruise the Boardwalk
This 1938 picture of the Steeplechase Amusement Park gives us something to look forward to, keeping social distancing in mind! The Park is now open, but with a few changes in service. You can learn more from the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation website.
Take in a Broadway Show
Eventually, we will be able to take in a Broadway show! This I Love New York commercial features Frank Langella's Dracula. The series of commercials was produced by the NYS Department of Economic Development to promote tourism.
Head to the Beach!
A number of Long Island beaches are open to the public. You can find specific information on the NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation website. This image is from a series of slides produced by the Dept. of Economic Development.
Check out the Falls
Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the United States. You can still enjoy the spectacular experience even with a few restrictions in place. This 1935 image is from the Education Department's Division of Visual Instruction.
Spend a Day at the Office
We might not miss a dreadful commute, but we do look forward to a normal day at work! This 1936 image of traffic at the Triborough Bridge is from a series of lanterns slides transferred from the Division of Visual Instruction.
Enjoy a Little Friendly Competition
Perhaps by fall you will be able to enjoy a game of tag football, with appropriate protective gear and safety measures in place! At the 1980 Pumpkin Bowl, Times Union reporters crushed Gov. Carey and staff 21-7! Check out the Governor's public information photos for more images.
Take in a Game
Cornell ended the season with a first-place ECAC finish, but were unable to compete in the cancelled NCAA national championships. We're looking forward to when we can root for our favorite teams in person again, like the fans at the Amherst-Cornell game shown here.
The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World
We will know we are back to normal when people from around the world are on the ferry to Liberty Island. Check out the National Park Service's website for updates.
Welcome back everyone!
